Adult Passport Renewal by Mail and Online Payment Instructions
Most adults who are holding 10 years validity passport book and/or card are eligible to renew your passport by mail if you are residing in Thailand. Personal appearance is NOT required. You do not need to travel to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
Passport processing time from when we receive your completed application package to when you receive new passport is 4-6 weeks, same as other in person passport services. There is no expedited service when applying for U.S. passport overseas.
Please note: if you are traveling in less than two weeks, please prepare the following required documents and contact us via the contact form for the embassy or consulate general closest to you. Please provide proof of your itinerary or why you urgently need a passport.
Eligibility
You must answer YES to ALL of the following to renew your passport by mail:

If you do not meet the criteria to renew by mail, you must apply for a new passport in person using form DS-11. Please find Passport services and instructions at the Embassy/Consulate in Thailand here.

If you meet the eligibility requirements above, please submit the documents on the following checklist by mail:

✅ Step 1: Print Checklist (PDF 240KB)
✅ Step 2: Current or expired passport book, and/or card (original)
Include the passport you are renewing in the package you mail to the Embassy. The passport will be canceled and delivered together with your new U.S. passport along with any original documents you submitted.
You may make a copy of passport bio-data page and the recent Thailand visa stamp page for your record before mailing.
Note: As of April 10, 2023, the Embassy/Consulate will no longer issue passport linkage letters with newly issued passports. If a Thai government office requests one, your cancelled passport and your newly issued passport will suffice. ✅ Step 3: A completed form DS-82 (complete online, print out single-sided, SIGN and date)
*NOTE: You must provide a Social Security number if you have been issued one, in accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60(f) .
- If you have never been issued or have forgotten your Social Security Number, please click here.
If an applicant is unable to provide their SSN, then U.S. Embassy Bangkok can issue a direct-return passport to the United States only.
- If you have never been issued Social Security Number (SSN), you must submit a statement, signed and dated, that includes the phrase, “I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct: I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.”
✅ Step 4: TWO passport photos
ONLY WHITE backgrounds will be accepted
(blue backgrounds will be rejected) / 2″×2″ in size / Taken within 6 months/ NO eyeglasses / NO uniforms.

✅ Step 5: Passport fee payment confirmation
Pay passport application fee via the U.S. government’s secure payment site HERE. Note: When complete payment form, select “Thailand” at “Country” field.

If you are submitting a payment on behalf of another passport renewal applicant, please enter the applicant’s full name. All fields are required.
- Passport Book Only – $130
- Passport Card Only – $30
- Passport Book and Passport Card – $160
After successfully paying the fee, you must print out the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email and include it in the package you submit. Ensure that the payment confirmation includes a “Pay.gov tracking ID.”

✅ Step 6: Return Envelope
NOTE: Stamped or other forms of prepaid envelopes will not be accepted for mailing when you are applying for a U.S. passport in Thailand.
Finished passport will be delivered via a Thailand Post insured envelope. Please pay for the Courier Pass Back Envelope (100 THB) HERE. A physical envelope will be delivered to U.S. Embassy in Bangkok for returning your document.

✅ Step 7: [if applicable] Name change documents (original + 1 photocopy)
If you would like to change the name on your new passport due to marriage, divorce or court order, please include proof of your name change. Documents must be in original with English translation, if applicable (ex. Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Court Order).
✅ Step 8: Mail
Mail all the items listed above to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok.
You must mail your DS-82 passport renewal package to U.S. Embassy Bangkok per the address below via ONLY Thailand Post or DHL, or else your package will be rejected.
Please ensure that you receive a tracking number from the courier for your mailed package. Do not send packages to the U.S. Consulate Chiang Mai, only the U.S. Embassy Bangkok processes mail-in passport renewals.
