Who may Apply

Only applicants who meet the eligibility criteria listed under the “OPEN TO” section of the vacancy announcement will be considered. For more information, please  click here.

Hiring Preference

Qualified applicants who fall into hiring preference categories will be given preferences in the order listed below. It is essential that applicants accurately describe their eligibility status on the online application. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is ineligible for a hiring preference.

Hiring Preference Order:

  1. AEFM / USEFM who is a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran*
  2. AEFM / USEFM
  3. FS on LWOP**

* AEFM/USEFM applicants claiming preference-eligible as a U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of the most recent DD-214 (Member Copy 4), Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.   Mission HR’s decision on eligibility for U.S. Veterans’ preference after reviewing all required documentation is final.

As of April 1, 2014, any AEFM/USEFM who is a preference-eligible U.S. veteran who accepts a locally recruited position abroad for which Veterans’ Preference was a determining factor, may not invoke this preference again with the same agency at the same post.
