The U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Thailand is represented by the Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Asia Pacific Division. The DEA’s stated mission is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. It seeks to bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, the organizations and principal members of those organizations involved in growing, manufacturing or distributing controlled substances that appear in or are destined for illicit trafficking in the United States. It also recommends and supports non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on both the domestic and international markets. In carrying out its mission, the DEA is designated as the lead agency responsible for the development of the U.S. Government’s drug enforcement strategy, programs, planning and evaluations.
In Thailand, DEA supports the Royal Thai Government’s counter narcotics efforts, while targeting drug trafficking organizations responsible for smuggling controlled substances into the United States and the international market. The DEA has offices in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The area of responsibility for these two offices extends beyond Thailand’s borders and encompasses both Laos and Myanmar since the DEA has no personnel stationed in these countries at the present time.
